Everton in ‘advanced discussions’ to sign striker after deals for alternative targets were ‘impossible’

Everton to sign Ayew

Everton are reportedly in ‘advanced negotiations’ with free agent Andre Ayew with a view to signing him on a free transfer in the coming days.

The Toffees really are having a stinker this month. To date, they are yet to sign anyone during the January transfer window despite them sitting joint-bottom in the Premier League.

Academy product Anthony Gordon has left the club for a fee of around £45m and they are now acting desperately to try to sign a striker to boost their survival hopes under new boss Sean Dyche.

Everton have targeted prolific Coventry City striker Viktor Gyokeres but they have been unable to come to an agreement with the Championship outfit.

On deadline day, Everton were linked with former Chelsea attacker Michy Batshuayi. The Belgium international was said to be against a move as he viewed the Toffees as an ‘unstable’ club. Harsh but true.

The Premier League club may be about to finally get a signing over the line. L’Equipe are reporting that Ayew ‘could well return’ to England after ‘breaking his contract’ with Al-Sadd.

Everton are said to be in ‘advanced negotiations’ to sign the Ghana international. Given that he is a free agent, this transfer can be completed after Tuesday night’s deadline.

A separate report from The Independent adds that Everton are ‘making a late transfer bid’ for Ayew. They have ‘turned to’ the 33-year-old to ‘solve their scoring issues’.

They state: ‘Everton cast around in order to try and bring in a forward, with their issues exacerbated by the fact their budget is limited.’

If Sky Sports are to be believed, Everton face competition from Nottingham Forest for Ayew, as both Premier League clubs have been ‘offered’ the player.

Ayew and his representatives ‘will be in the UK on Wednesday’ as they look to secure him a move back to the Premier League.

Steve Cooper ‘likes’ Ayew as the head coach worked with him at Swansea. Though it is noted that Forest ‘currently do not have enough room in their squad to accommodate him’.

Knowing how Everton have fared in recent weeks, it would not be a surprise at all if relegation rivals Forest were to beat them to the signing of the free agent.

Ayew has previously had spells in the Premier League with Swansea City and West Ham. His last season in England was in 2020/21 for the Swans in the Championship. He netted 17 goals across all competitions that term.
