Barcelona linger as ‘unhappy’ Man City star ‘seriously considers’ transfer ahead of ‘major exit operation’

Barcelona target Gundogan

FC Barcelona are reportedly among the clubs interested in signing German international Ilkay Gundogan, who is ‘unhappy’ at Manchester City.

The Premier League holders paid just £20m to sign Gundogan from Borussia Dortmund in 2016.

The midfielder has proven to be a brilliant signing as he has helped Man City win the Premier League four times over the past few seasons.

Gundogan has been key to their success and he was sensational in 2020/21 as he scored 17 goals for the English outfit across all competitions.

The 32-year-old has regularly captained Man City this season and he has started 14 times in the Premier League. His future is in doubt though as he is out of contract in the summer.

TEAMtalk transfer expert Graeme Bailey has provided an update on Gundogan’s situation at Man City.

He has stated that Gundogan is “seriously considering” a move back to Germany but he may also “like” the idea of a switch to Barcelona.

“Barcelona have also shown an interest and a move to La Liga could be an option he looks at and likes.

“The talks between City and Gundogan have always been amicable, no doubting that. He loves the club and they love him, but that is why they are not pressurising him in any way, this will be his decision.”

Given Gundogan’s age, his next contract could prove to be his last before he retires so he will no doubt be keen to earn himself the best deal possible.

A move away from Man City could be likely, especially with it reported earlier this week that Gundogan is among five players who are “unhappy” with Pep Guardiola.

It has subsequently been stated that a “major exit operation” could be on the cards at the Etihad, with Barcelona unsurprisingly taking an interest in the goings on at City ahead of a potential free transfer.

Earlier this month, Man City were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Southampton. After this game, Gundogan suggested that some of his teammates are lacking “desire”.

“I would share that it was a lack of attitude, lack of confidence, lack of commitment you know,” said Gundogan.

“I feel like, especially today, but even in the last few weeks, we had games where we could have…
