Pundit thinks Everton made mistake by not cashing in on Gordon sooner as Newcastle circle

Gabriel Agbonlahor thinks that Everton will have some regrets that they didn’t cash in on Anthony Gordon in the summer after Chelsea were interested.

The Everton winger has scored three goals this season, although he hasn’t quite reached the same levels from last season.

The Toffees rejected a £60million bid from Chelsea and also knocked back an offer from Newcastle in the summer.

Newcastle have recently rekindled their interest and are now leading the race for the 21-year-old winger.

Other than a pre-arranged deal to sign Australian youngster Garang Kuol, Newcastle are yet to sign any players in this window.

Agbonlahor thinks that Gordon could thrive in a new environment like Newcastle, although Everton will have some regrets about not selling him sooner.

The pundit told Footy Insider: “I do like Anthony Gordon. I think fans sometimes forget how young he is. He’s only 21, and he’s still got a lot to learn.

“He’s got the speed, he’s got the dribbling and the technique – he just needs more goals. He is going to learn a lot if he goes somewhere like Newcastle.

“But the thing at Everton is, I’ve heard that he wants silly money in his new contract.

“I’m sure if they get a good enough offer, they will accept it. They probably wish they sold him for £60million to Chelsea.

“I think a different environment, away from a relegation battle – it will help him a lot.”

Following Newcastle’s 1-0 victory over Southampton, Eddie Howe refused to be drawn into any speculation surrounding the winger.

Howe told reporters: “Honestly, I’ve got no idea. I’ve been preparing for the game so I’ve got no idea. But I wouldn’t comment on individual players anyway.”

Both Newcastle and Chelsea held an interest in Gordon in the summer, but they were both unsuccessful with their bids.

Everton were reluctant to let him leave in the summer, but they might now be more open to his sale given the situation they find themselves in.

Howe will be keen to strengthen his side as they stand a great chance of finishing in the top four this season. They currently hold a three-point lead over Tottenham, with a game in hand.

Newcastle have the best defensive record in the Premier League as they have only conceded 11 goals so far.

If they continue to average 1.95 points per game from now until the end of the season, they will finish with 74 points which will likely get them a place in the top four.
