Former Washington Spirit coach Kris Ward banned from NWSL indefinitely

Former Washington Spirit head coach Kris Ward has been banned indefinitely from working in the NWSL, the league announced Tuesday.

The Spirit fired Ward in August, after an ‘incident at the training grounds’ during which he confronted a player during a practice session. Following an investigation by the league, he’s been barred and remains “ineligible to work in the league in any capacity unless or until approved by the commissioner.”

Further details of the incident were not disclosed, but the league confirmed a third-party investigation found Ward to be engaged “in overly aggressive behavior and harassment through negative racial stereotyping towards a player in violation of league policy.”

Ward will only be eligible for future employment in the NWSL with approval from the commissioner, and must undergo mandatory discrimination, harassment, bullying and racial bias training.

Additionally, he must “demonstrate a sincere commitment to correcting his behavior and acknowledge wrongdoing and accept personal responsibility for inappropriate conduct.”

The spirit have since hired Mark Parsons as head coach.
