Erik ten Hag urges Man Utd to plan for 7-team title race

Erik ten Hag has warned Manchester United that they will need to begin planning to compete in Premier League title races involving seven teams.

The Red Devils have come on leaps and bounds in the Dutchman’s first season at the helm, and could reignite talk of a title challenge if they beat table-topping Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

United will move to within five points of the Gunners with victory in north London having dropped two points late on at Crystal Palace on Wednesday.

Ten Hag has recognised the progress United have made in a short time, but has stressed that the club will need ‘consistency in strategy’ if they’re to make another jump and truly jostle for major honours.

“The Premier League in this moment develops into having six or seven teams who all can finally win the league because there are so many investments,” Ten Hag said.

“When you have the right philosophy and strategy, many more clubs can compete for the top positions in the league.

“That’s a great challenge and if you want to be there, you have to be really good. You need that consistency; you need that good strategy – and consistency in the strategy – and you need hard work to compete. And if you want to win trophies, everything has to go in the right way.”

He added: “I’m quite convinced of the process [at United]. I think we’re [heading] in the right direction so but it also means we have to improve a lot if we want to compete in the future for the top positions because the competition will be really tough.”
