Leagues Cup: Whitecaps FC Grouped with LIGA MX Side Club León and MLS Western Conference Rival LA Galaxy

'Caps Back in Action on Saturday at FC Dallas

VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC will play in West Group 3 to start the 2023 Leagues Cup this July alongside LIGA MX side Club León and fellow MLS Western Conference side Los Angeles Galaxy.


CLUB LEÓN

Founded in 1944, Club León have won eight LIGA MX titles since their inception, most recently winning the Apertura Championship in 2020. The side already bolsters Leagues Cup experience, reaching the final in the 2021 edition of the tournament and defeating Seattle Sounders FC by a score of 3-2 to be crowned champions.

This will be the first time the ‘Caps face Club León and the second time they face a LIGA MX opponent in official competition, having previously faced Tigres UANL in the 2016-17 Concacaf Champions League.

LOS ANGELES GALAXY

One of the 10 original MLS clubs that were part of the league’s launch in 1996, Los Angeles Galaxy hold the record for most MLS Cup wins with five.

All-time, the ‘Caps have tallied a 10W-14L-6D record against the Galaxy in MLS regular season and MLS Cup Playoffs action. The most recent meeting between the two sides came at BC Place last September, with the ‘Caps capturing a dominant 3-0 victory thanks to goals from Ryan Gauld, Pedro Vite, and Tosaint Ricketts. It was the Galaxy’s only loss in their last 11 regular season matches of 2022.

TICKET INFORMATION

Season Ticket Members will have access to the first Whitecaps FC home match of the tournament. Should Whitecaps FC advance to the Knockout Stage, Season Ticket Members will have first right of refusal for their season seats with an opt-in-pay-as-we-play package.

2023 LEAGUES CUP

The 15 groups are now set for the inaugural edition of the highly-anticipated Leagues Cup 2023, the official Concacaf competition where all 47 clubs – 18 from LIGA MX and 29 from MLS – will play in a World Cup-style tournament that will qualify three clubs for the 2024 Concacaf Champions League. The inaugural edition of Leagues Cup will take place July 21- August 19, 2023.

As the 2022 MLS Cup champion, Los Angeles Football Club qualified directly into the Round of 32 of Leagues Cup 2023. LIGA MX champion Club de Fútbol Pachuca earned the bye as the LIGA MX champion with the most combined points accumulated across the Clausura and Apertura seasons in the 2022 calendar year.
