Paul Parker believes “the vast majority” of Manchester United fans will have been “disappointed” by “immature” summer signing Antony.
The Brazil winger joined the Red Devils in a mammoth £85.5million deal from Ajax last summer.
United probably could have landed Antony for a cheaper fee earlier on in the summer transfer window but were forced to pay an extortionate fee after Ajax had already sold several key players.
The 22-year-old actually scored on his debut for the club, netting the opening goal against Arsenal in United’s 3-1 victory – the only league game the Gunners have lost this season.
In total, Antony has five goals in 16 games for the Red Devils.
While he has failed to fully justify his transfer fee, Antony can definitely not be regarded as a flop.
He has made a bigger impact than Jadon Sancho managed last season and is definitely above the England winger in the pecking order.
Former England and United defender Paul Parker is not too impressed, however.
Parker believes Antony “seems very immature on the pitch” and has criticised his lack of urgency.
“Antony has done okay for Man United,” Parker told Soccernews.
“He hasn’t been amazing but he is also young and needs to adapt to the Premier League.
“But honestly, I think that the vast majority of the fans have been disappointed by him.
“They expected a different kind of player. They expected him to be very quick and run past defenders but he hasn’t really done that.
“I personally think that he is thinking too slow and he seems very immature on the pitch. He needs to beat people more and believe in himself because he has the abilities to be a very good winger for Man United.”
Parker actually believes new signing Wout Weghorst is the “perfect” acquisition after he joined on loan from Burnley.
He said: “I think Wout Weghorst is the perfect addition to Man United.
“He is physically strong and at the World Cup we saw that he can also do something with his feet. He is really not just a target man, although you can of course use him as a pinch hitter.
“He has developed since then (his Premier League stint with Burnley). He has added quite a few elements to his game and I think he can help United meet their goals for this season.
“Besides, I don’t see it as an emergency solution at all. I think he can also be the solution for Man United in the longer term. He might even turn out to be the missing link!”
