January 11, 2023 – Major League Soccer (MLS) – Real Salt Lake News Release
HERRIMAN, Utah – Real Salt Lake has extended the contract term length for veteran Major League Soccer goalkeeper Zac MacMath through the 2024 season, with a Club option for 2025.
“I’m very excited to extend my stay here in Utah for three more years,” said MacMath, entering his 13th year in MLS, logging time with Philadelphia, Colorado and Vancouver prior to arriving in Salt Lake prior to the 2020 campaign. “We have created a great culture around the Club, and I hope to continue to add to that culture for years to come. As a group, we have a lot to be excited about heading into 2023, and I speak for everyone in the locker room when I say we cannot wait for our home opener on March 11.”
MacMath, 31, returns to Real Salt Lake on the heels of a record-setting year, during which he became the first-ever true “Iron Man” in the Claret-and-Cobalt’s 18 seasons, logging every single minute (3,060) of RSL’s 34-game regular-season slate (in addition to a full 120 minutes plus penalties in the season-ending match in Austin). Additionally, MacMath made a career-high 102 saves and recorded 10 clean sheets en route to the postseason a year ago, the fourth-most shutouts in the 2022 MLS regular season. In total, MacMath has made 140 saves in 48 matches across three years for Real Salt Lake.
Now with more than 190 MLS games and 17,000+ minutes played, MacMath kicked off his professional career with the Philadelphia Union in 2011, after being selected fifth overall in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft following a collegiate career at the University of Maryland. While with Philadelphia, MacMath appeared in 103 matches for the Union, before joining Colorado, where he would go on to play 33 matches during current RSL Head Coach Pablo Mastroeni’s first MLS coaching stint. The 2019 season saw MacMath spend one season in Canada, appearing in eight matches for Vancouver Whitecaps before being traded to RSL in early 2020.
Last Fall, Real Salt Lake closed out its 18th MLS season, falling in the First Round of the 2022 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs via penalty-kick shootout tiebreaker at Austin FC, following a 2-2 regulation / extra-time deadlock that saw RSL play the final 67 minutes plus stoppage time down a man following FW Rubio Rubin’s second caution. To qualify for the postseason, RSL earned four points in its final pair of contests to vault itself past Portland Timbers FC and capture the seventh and final Western…
