Romano reveals £70m striker ‘one to watch’ amid rumours of bid

Reported Manchester United target Randal Kolo Muani during the World Cup semi-final

Manchester United would have to pay “around” £70million to sign Eintracht Frankfurt striker Randal Kolo Muani, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag is on the search for a new striker after Cristiano Ronaldo left the club.

Several players have been linked with a move to Old Trafford, including Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic and RB Salzburg’s Benjamin Sesko.

Ten Hag’s current options up top are Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.

It would be fair to say that this is not the strongest frontline and the lack of depth is a worry as United aim to finish in the top four of the Premier League.

Rashford has been excellent this season and was once again on the scoresheet in the Red Devils’ last game – a 1-0 victory at Wolves on New Year’s Eve.

Martial, on the other hand, has not been great and does not look like the most effective No. 9.

The 27-year-old has often played through the middle this term – when he has been fit – and has scored five goals in ten matches across all competitions.

United were expected to pursue a new striker in the 2023 summer transfer window, however, the departure of Ronaldo has brought their search forward to this month.

While a new No. 9 would greatly increase their chances of finishing inside the Champions League places, Ten Hag has admitted that the club will not burn money in the winter transfer window.

He said: “There will be many games to follow, so I think there is a need for a new striker. We need one who can have an impact, otherwise, you are just burning money and you don’t strengthen the squad.”

French newspaper L’Equipe has reported this week that United are preparing a €60m offer to bring Kolo Muani to Old Trafford.

Kolo Muani has only been with Frankfurt for six months and is apparently keen to stay in Germany for the time being.

Bayern Munich are also believed to be interested, which is a blow for United, who will struggle to convince Frankfurt to sell.

A €60m bid would probably not be enough to tempt Frankfurt into a January sale, but Romano does say his price tag is “around £70m” (€79m).

It would be pretty surprising to see United cough up this amount for Kolo Muani, who is under contract with his current club until 2027 after leaving Nantes as a free agent last summer.
