Pitt Falls In College Cup Semifinal To #13 Indiana, 2-0

CARY, NC – The Panthers saw their historic 2022 season come to an end Friday night in the 2022 College Cup Semifinals as the Indiana Hoosiers handed Pitt the 2-0 loss.

The Hoosiers got on the board first in the 14th minute as they drew a foul on Mateo Maillefaud in the box to earn a penalty kick. On the ensuing PK, Joe van der Sar made a huge diving stop to his right but the rebound was collected by Ryan Wittenbrink and buried for the Indiana goal.

Jackson Walti had the best chance of the opening half for the Panthers in the 26th minute as he found some space at the top of the box and ripped a hard shot that looked bound for the left corner but the Indiana keeper made a big stop diving to his right to keep the 1-0 lead.

After controlling the ball for a majority of the final 20 minutes, the Hoosiers extended their lead to 2-0 with 17 seconds to play as Tommy Mihalic beat van der Sar to the right corner from a bad angle on the right side of the box.

The Panthers had back-to-back great chances in the 58th minute as Filip MIrkovic gained some room and ripped a low sinking shot towards the right corner but the Indiana keeper was up to the test, poking the ball out of bounds. On the ensuing corner, Mirkovic sent a great ball into the box where Jackson Gilman got a hard header shot on target but again the Hoosier keeper made a stop with some quick reflexes.

The final chance of the match for the Panthers came in the 74th minute as Bertin Jacquesson headed a cross towards the right corner but the Indiana keeper made another huge diving stop to keep Pitt off the scoreboard.

The shots in the match were even 7-7 along with the corner, 3-3. Pitt was whistled with 16 fouls compared to Indiana’s four fouls in the match.

With the loss, Pitt concludes their 2022 campaign with a 12-5-5 overall record and their second College Cup trip in program history.
