Men's Soccer Set to Ring The Bells at Old Queens Friday Afternoon

PISCATWAY, N.J. – After winning its first Big Ten Championship in program history, the Rutgers men’s soccer team is set to participate in a special university tradition on Friday, Dec. 2 at 12 p.m. when the team rings the bell at Old Queens. The bell, gifted to the University from Colonel Henry Rutgers in 1826, is reserved to mark significant occasions university wide.

The Old Queens bell is a celebrated icon of the university’s history. Before the university expanded beyond the Old Queens campus, the bell was rung to signal daily worship and the change of classes. As the university’s footprint grew, the ringing of the bell took on new meaning and was reserved to mark significant occasions, including those of prized athletic success. The bell is also rung every year to mark commencement, welcome first-year students at the new student convocation and on the annual Rutgers Day.

The team will also be honored during halftime of the Rutgers men’s basketball game on Saturday, Dec. 3 against Indiana at 4 p.m. The Big Ten Championship trophy will be at the Rutgers Winter Village pregame.

Rutgers hosted all three rounds of the Big Ten Tournament at Yurcak Field, defeating Indiana 3-1 in the title game on Nov. 13 in front of over 4,000 fans.

The Championship win is not only the first for the program but the first in any men’s sports at Rutgers and the third Big Ten Championship for the Scarlet Knights since joining the conference. The victory also punched their ticket to the team’s first NCAA Tournament berth since 2015.

RU dominated the Big Ten All-Tournament team as MD Myers earned Offensive Player of the Tournament while Hugo Le Guennec was named Defensive Player of the Tournament. Chris TiaoJackson Temple and Ciaran Dalton were also selected to the All-Tournament Team.

The awards don’t stop there as Rutgers pulled in a program-best eight Big Ten All-Conference Awards in 2022. Myers led the pack as the unanimous Big Ten Player of the Year as well as an All-Big Ten First Team selection. Cole Cruthers was selected as the first Co-Freshman of the Year in the Big Ten era, as well as to the All-Freshman Team. This marks the first time in program history the Scarlet Knights have had two major award winners in the same season.
