Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni says Lionel Messi simply did what he does best as he scored one and got the assist for the other in their 2-0 win over Mexico at the World Cup on Saturday.

Messi opened the scoring with a low strike from outside the box in the 62nd minute, before a moment of magic from Enzo Fernandez sealed the points in the 87th minute.

“You know what happened,” Scaloni told reporters. “The number 10 scored the goal.

“He did what he does best, scoring goals, supported by the whole squad and it was thrilling in every aspect.”

He added: “The first half wasn’t a good one for either team but we started to play better in the second and Messi did what he does.

“The group is able to support him and knows the importance that he has.”

The result means Argentina are back firmly in contention to progress, having lost their opening game 2-1 to Saudi Arabia.

Poland beat Saudi Arabia 2-0 in the other group game moving them into top spot with four points, ahead of a final clash with Los Albiceleste.

“It’s going to be difficult because everybody plays differently, not only because of Leo but because of other players that we have,” Scaloni said.

“That makes the game more difficult. We will try to play the game that everybody is hopping for and if it doesn’t eventuate we will leave everything on the pitch like we did today.”
