Cristiano Ronaldo has been branded a “cheat” after his “ridiculous” display in Portugal’s 3-2 win over Ghana on Thursday.
Ronaldo won and scored a penalty to break the deadlock against the African side and make him the only man to have scored a goal in five World Cups.
The striker, who dominated headlines ahead of the World Cup due to his controversial interview with Piers Morgan, went down under the challenge of Mohammed Salisu, with VAR sticking with the referee’s call on review.
Chris Sutton (correctly) thought Ronaldo went down far too easily and accused the former Manchester United striker of setting a “terrible example to young kids”.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Ronaldo said: “Look it is not the first time is it. I have to say the VAR officials are absolute bottle jobs.
“It isn’t good play by Ronaldo. It is a terrible example to young kids everwhere around the world. Everyone will be tumbling over.
“He is a great player. But it was cheating. I thought the officials had to be stronger.
“It was embarrassing really how they missed it. I was at the Brazil game and I saw the footage. Blimey – you don’t have to watch it many times to see that he went over.
“Totally manufactured. Out of order. The VAR officials shouldn’t miss that.
“I was reading comments saying it was a penalty. It is ridiculous and cheating.
“I know he has his fans within the media and around the world but come on. That was awful.”

After the game, Ronaldo responded to his exit from United and reflected on a “beautiful moment”.
“It was a week that finishes the chapter, it’s closed. We won and I could help the team – the rest does not matter,” Ronaldo said after the game.
“This was a beautiful moment, my fifth World Cup,
“We won, we started on our good foot and it is a very important win. The first match is crucial in these tournaments.
“The first player to score goals at five World Cups, this makes me very proud.”
