Neymar Set For Ankle Scans, Tite Insists He'll Play On

Neymar will undergo scans on an ankle injury but Brazil head coach Tite is bullish that he will continue to play at the World Cup after picking up a knock in Thursday’s 2-0 win over Serbia.

Richarlison scored a second-half double as Brazil claimed their first-up win, but Neymar’s late substitution was cause for concern.

The Paris Saint-Germain star was replaced in the 80th minute having tried to play through the pain after picking up the knock and appeared close to tears with a swollen ankle on the sidelines.

Brazil team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar joined Tite during the post-game press conference and revealed he would need to undergo scans.

“Neymar had an injury on the right ankle, direct trauma,” Lasmar said. “Due to the shock that he had with the knee of the Serbian player, we started immediately the treatment on the bench. He continued with the treatment with the physiotherapy.

“We need 24-48 hours to have a better understanding through the MRI. Tomorrow we will have a new assessment. Now we need to wait, we cannot make any premature comments on his evolution. We need to wait.

“He stayed 11 minutes on the pitch after his injury up until the point he could no longer continue.”

Tite, however, was confident that his star attacker would be fine to play on in the tournament.

“It’s remarkable that he could bear this pain while the team is playing,” he said. “You can be sure that Neymar will play in the World Cup. He will play in the Cup.”

Goal scoring hero Richarlison added: “The most important thing for us it to have him at 100 per cent for the next match. When I get to the hotel I’m going to go and see how he is doing.”
