Luis Enrique Says Spain's 7-0 Win Shows Critics of 'Lack of Goals'

Spain boss Luis Enrique says his side made an emphatic statement to those who didnt believe they have enough firepower with Wednesday’s 7-0 World Cup win over Costa Rica.

La Roja flexed their muscle in their World Cup opener with Ferran Torres scoring twice, while Dani Olmo, Marco Asensio, Gavi, Carlos Soler and Alvaro Morata all netted.

Gavi became the third youngest goal scorer in World Cup history with his strike, coming at 18 years and 110 days, behind only Pele] and Manuel Rosas. He is the youngest scorer in Spanish World Cup history.

“I had always read that there was a lack of goals in this team,” Luis Enrique told reporters.

“But although we still don’t have a clear scoring reference, we have many players who score goals.”

Spain’s squad didnt include a recognized out-and-out goal scorer unlike previous sides, including the 2010 World Cup-winning group led by David Villa.

Atletico Madrid forward Morata, Real Madrid’s Asensio and Barcelona’s Torres are the players selected to lead the line.

“This was a very special game for us,” Luis Enrique said. “It is usually difficult for us to start competitions, but we have done very well. It has been a very important victory.”

Spain’s next game is on Sunday against Germany, who lost their opener 2-1 to Japan.

“We are the first to start training tomorrow to prepare for the game in Germany,” Luis Enrique said.

“Praise weakens you, we know that, and we are not going to fall into that trap. The idea is to always play like this, but we are not going to always win by a landslide.

“Anyone who understands football can see that we are a difficult rival.”
