Gareth Southgate will make a late call on whether to start England captain Harry Kane against the United States on Friday after a scan cleared him of significant damage to his ankle, 90min understands.
The 29-year-old was on the receiving end of a heavy tackle during England’s 6-2 mauling of Iran, their opening Group B game at the 2022 World Cup.
Kane continued playing until the final 15 minutes, when he was replaced by Callum Wilson, and was sent for a scan on Wednesday to determine the severity of the injury after complaining of ongoing discomfort.
Southgate told the press immediately after the game that he thought Kane was “fine”, and a scan has determined that England’s talisman has escaped serious injury.

He is, 90min understands, still feeling the knock, though, despite taking part in training on Wednesday with the rest of England’s squad – Jordan Pickford told the assembled media after training that Kane was “a little bit sore” but had been “on the grass today”.
A late call will be made by Southgate over whether England will risk Kane against the United States, who laboured to a 1-1 draw with Wales having made a bright start to the game.
The Three Lions were exciting and vibrant in their opening encounter against Iran, and took a number of the chances that came their way.
Kane, who is second only to Wayne Rooney in England’s all-time goalscorer list, was not among the scorers, with Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka (two), Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish netting instead in a convincing display.
