Christopher Nkunku ‘to join’ Chelsea in summer despite French forward suffering knee injury

Christopher Nkunku will reportedly join Chelsea in the summer transfer window despite RB Leipzig confirming the forward faces an unspecified spell on the sidelines with a torn knee ligament injury which ruled him out of the World Cup.

Chelsea are believed to be willing to pay the striker’s £53million release clause, with Sportsmail revealing in September that Nkunku had undergone medical tests in Frankfurt in September ahead of a possible move to Stamford Bridge.

The Premier League giants are expected to seal the deal, despite Nkunku’s injury, as Le10Sport in France report that ‘everything is complete’ for the striker to make a summer switch.

Nkunku’s agent Pini Zahavi is claimed to have agreed the terms of the deal, with the 25-year-old expected to complete his move on July 1.

Nkunku has scored 12 goals in just 15 Bundesliga games this season, helping RB Leipzig go into the World Cup break in third place.

The striker was cruelly denied the opportunity to feature at his first World Cup, after suffering an injury during France’s final training session before flying to Qatar.

His injury was sustained after a lunging tackle from Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga, with RB Leipzig confirming the severity in an update on Saturday.

‘Christo tore the lateral ligament in his left knee on November 15 while training with the French National team,’ a club statement read.

‘It is unclear how long he will be out; there are several treatment options for this injury.’

Nkunku vowed to ‘come back even stronger’ following the setback, while he said Camavinga had been ‘unfairly targeted’ after the midfielder suffered racist abuse following his role in the injury.
