Buckeyes Fall to No. 12 UNCG 6-5 in PKs – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State (11-3-6) and No. 12-seed UNC Greensboro (13-1-5) played 110 minutes of NCAA Tournament soccer Sunday before a winner was decided in Greensboro, North Carolina.

With the score tied at 1-all after regulation, neither team netted the game-winner in either of the two 10-minute overtime sessions, sending the game to penalty kicks.

It was UNC Greensboro who earned the right to advance to the third round of the 2022 NCAA Tournament with the advantage in penalty kicks, 6-5.

How it Happened

Neither team was able to muster much of an offensive attack in the opening 45 minutes. UNCG led 6-1 in shots before the Buckeyes closed strong with three quality attempts late, none if which got through the Spartans defense.

Keagan McLaughlin was solid in the first half with three saves to help send the match into the lockerroom scoreless.

The match remained scoreless until the 77th minute when UNC Greensboro’s Ishmail El Harchi got one past McLaughlin in the lower left corner of the net to give the Spartans the 1-0 lead.

Parker Grinstead then netted the equalizer four minutes later with Deylen Vellios on the assist. Grinstead directed his fourth of the season into the left side of the Spartan net. It was his seventh career goal.

The assist was the second of year for Vellios and his third career.

The match went to overtime tied at 1-all.

Neither team was able to score in either of the 10-minute overtime sessions, sending the match to penalty kicks.

UNCG then advanced on PKs, 6-5.
