DURHAM, NC – South Carolina women’s soccer (15-3-4) will stay in Durham to face Duke (14-4-3) for the third round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 6:00 pm. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
Last Time Out
- The No. 13 and third-seeded Gamecocks advanced to the Sweet 16 after defeating sixth-seeded Harvard Friday night 3-2
- South Carolina got on the board early with an own goal from Harvard coming just before the third minute of play, giving the Gamecocks a 1-0 lead.
- The Gamecocks extended the lead in the 22nd minute when redshirt-senior Samantha Chang intercepted the ball and sprinted up the middle, passing it up to junior Catherine Barry where she was able to capitalize in the box and send it to the back of the net to put South Carolina up 2-0
- In the 41st minute, the Gamecocks set up for the first corner kick of the game where 5th year senior Jyllissa Harris sent it in from the far-right corner, and Barry headed the ball in past a Harvard defender to give South Carolina it’s 3-0 lead heading into the half
- Barry tallied her ninth and tenth goal of the season, and brought her career total to 24, tying her at the No. 5 spot in the record books for career goals
- Harvard got on the board in the 81st minute with an own goal from South Carolina
- The Crimson brought themselves within one with two minutes remaining after a goal on a corner kick from Jordan Di Verniero brought things to 3-2, but South Carolina remained on top
Scouting the Blue Devils
- Second-seeded Duke made its way into the third round after a late goal from Katie Groff in the 88th minute put themselves over Texas 1-0
- Sunday’s matchup against the Blue Devils will be the fifth in program history (excluding exhibition games), with Duke holding a small 2-1-1 advantage on the series
- In the last meeting, South Carolina defeated Duke 1-0 at home in Columbia on Aug. 25, 2013
- Duke improved to 7-0 all-time at home in the NCAA Tournament second round matches.
- The Blue Devils are now 27-3-1 in NCAA Tournament matches played in Durham, N.C.
- The shutout was the 11th of the season, and third straight, for the Duke defense
