Six ACC Women’s Soccer Teams Advance to NCAA Round of 16


GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – For the first time since 2018, six Atlantic Coast Conference teams advanced to the Sweet 16 of the 2022 NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament. The ACC has the most teams remaining of any other conference in the country.
 
Florida State and Notre Dame, the conference’s No. 1 seeds, advanced to Sunday with wins over No. 8 seeds LSU and Santa Clara, respectively. The Seminoles posted a 4-1 win over the Tigers, while the Fighting Irish blanked the Broncos 4-0. FSU will meet fourth-seeded Pitt in the third round for an All-ACC tilt on Sunday at 5 p.m., while Notre Dame will face fifth-seeded TCU on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. in South Bend.
 
On Thursday, second-seeded North Carolina sealed its spot in the Sweet 16 with a 3-1 victory over Georgia, while second-seeded Duke used an 88th minute header from Katie Groff to punch its ticket to the third round with a 1-0 win over Texas. UNC will play host to sixth-seeded BYU for a Saturday showdown at 11:30 a.m., while the Blue Devils take on third-seeded South Carolina in Durham on Sunday at 6 p.m.
 
Third-seeded Virginia defeated Xavier 3-1 in University Park, Pennsylvania with two early goals from Lia Godfrey, and fourth-seeded Pitt edged Georgetown 2-1 in Tallahassee. The Cavaliers will now meet host and second-seeded Penn State on Sunday at 5 p.m., while Pitt readies for top seed Florida State on Sunday.
 
The ACC has had a team in the Women’s College Cup in 39 of the past 40 NCAA Tournaments and in each of the past 16 years.
 
The ACC has 55 appearances in the College Cup – the most of any conference (the next closest conference is the Pac-12 with 28 appearances). Current membership combines for 67 appearances.
 
Current ACC membership combines for 27 NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championships. North Carolina owns 21 NCAA titles and Florida State owns three, while Notre Dame won three prior to joining the league in 2013.
