Ballon d’Or runner-up Sadio Mane’s 2022 World Cup availability is up in the air after sustaining a right fibula injury.

Senegal international Mane was forced off in the 20th minute of Bayern Munich’s 6-1 win over Werder Bremen in the German Bundesliga on Tuesday.

Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann was initially hopeful it was not too bad, but the club have since confirmed he has a problem at the top of his right fibula.

The Bavarians have ruled Mane out of Sunday’s league game against Schalke 04 already, but his World Cup hangs in the balance.

Bayern said: “Further examinations will follow in the coming days. FC Bayern is also in contact with the medical staff of the Senegalese Football Association.”

Senegal are in Group A alongside Qatar, Ecuador and the Netherlands, with their opening game against the Dutch on November 21.

There have been reports that Mane’s injury will rule him out for three to four weeks, which would mean he will miss the World Cup.

Mane played a key role as Senegal won the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year, netting the winning spotkick in a shootout.

The 30-year-old, who moved from Liverpool to Bayern in the off-season, finished runner-up to Karim Benzema for this year’s Ballon d’Or last month.
