NO. 1 UCLA TRAVELS TO NO. 9 STANFORD FRIDAY
No. 1-ranked UCLA (13-0-0, 5-0-0 in the Pac-12) will travel to No. 9-ranked Stanford (11-2-1, 4-1-0) for a Friday night sold-out showdown at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. The match, UCLA’s fourth against a Top 10 team this season, will be televised live on Pac-12 Network at 6pm.
SCHOOL-RECORD PERFECT START
With a perfect 13-0-0 record, UCLA has recorded its best start in school history, surpassing the 2001 squad’s 11 victories to start the year. Strong starts have been commonplace for the Bruins in recent years, as they have won at least their first eight games in each of the last three seasons. UCLA remains the only team in NCAA Division I soccer, men’s or women’s, with an unblemished mark.
WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE NUMBER ONE
For the sixth consecutive week, UCLA ranks No. 1 in the United Soccer Coaches poll and the Top Drawer Soccer poll. The Bruins are also ranked No. 1 in the NCAA RPI. The last time UCLA held the top spot in the United Soccer Coaches poll prior to this season was 2017, when the Bruins were No. 1 for five weeks from Sept. 5-Oct. 3. UCLA’s Sept. 4 win over No. 1 North Carolina was its second ever over a top-ranked team and second in a row after beating No. 1 Florida State on Aug. 29, 2019.
AOZASA RETURNS TO THE FARM
UCLA first-year head coach Margueritte Aozasa makes her return to Stanford, where she served as an assistant coach for seven seasons (2015-21). She helped guide the Cardinal to NCAA Championships in 2017 and 2019 and Pac-12 titles from 2015-19. The 2018 team also reached the College Cup. Stanford’s record during Aozasa’s time on the Farm was 125-19-8. Aozasa is a Bay Area native who grew up in Mountain View and graduated from Los Altos High School and Santa Clara University. She was the ECNL Head Coach for 10 years at MVLA Soccer Club.
SCOUTING THE CARDINAL
Stanford is coached by former UCLA men’s soccer player Paul Ratcliffe, who was a member of the Bruins’ 1990 NCAA Championship team. Ratcliffe, who is in his 20th season, is the winningest head coach in Stanford men’s and women’s soccer history…
