EVANSTON, Ill. – The University of Wisconsin women’s soccer team played a tough match against No. 6 Northwestern on a late Friday night at Martin Field, but the Wildcats defended their home turf with a 2-1 decision.
After tonight’s match, NU now stands alone on top of the Big Ten standings and ended the Badgers’ eight-game unbeaten streak, which tied for longest in school history.
Northwestern had scored a goal in the first ten minutes in four of the last six games coming into tonight. Unfortunately for the Badgers, Meg Boade extended that statistic for the Wildcats by sending in her own rebound after Erin McKinney saved Boade’s initial shot six minutes into the game. Although this gave the home team the momentum early, Wisconsin still had a lot of game to play.
The Wildcats have excelled on both the offensive and defensive front this season and that dominance was in full effect tonight. The second half began in the Wildcats favor as they held the upperhand and didn’t give the Badgers much of a chance to change that. Northwestern extended their lead on another rebound goal that was put past McKinney by Aurea Carmen in the 68th minute.
Right when Wisconsin needed a spark, Rylee Howard brought hope back to the team again. Aidan McConnell sent in a corner in the 73rd minute and after the ball bounced around in the box, where Howard found it near her feet and blasted it through the Wildcats defense.
