MADISON, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin women’s soccer team continues its domination in the Big Ten as it remains undefeated after five conference games to go with an eight-game win streak. However, the Badgers look to face their toughest opponents yet in Northwestern, recently ranked No. 6 in the country. Both teams have not a lost a game to an opponent in their conference thus far and look to do the same in a big matchup this Friday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. in Evanston.
FIVE THINGS TO KNOW:
1. LAST TIME OUT: In an intense fashion, Wisconsin overcame Minnesota this past Sunday at McClimon. After going down early in the game, the Badgers struggled to find their offensive rhythm throughout eighty minutes. However, it was none other than Emma Jaskaniec who brought hope to the team and its chances of pulling off a comeback. In the 82nd minute, Jaskaniec one-timed the ball sent in by Ashley Martinez into the back of the net to bring things even. Just four minutes later Aryssa Mahrt took the Gophers keeper one-on-one and was able to beat her far post and send the ball into goal claiming the team’s tenth win on the year.
2. HOWARD HONORED: Freshman Rylee Howard comes into the game after being recognized as the Big Ten Freshman of the Week. Following her three-point performance against Maryland after scoring a goal and assisting the game-winning one, the young player comes into the match with all of the confidence.
3. THE WILDCATS WRATH: Northwestern has been exceptional this season after finishing last year on a five-game losing streak. With something to prove, the Wildcats have turned the team around and have not lost a game since Aug. 21. The team from Evanston has also been excelling on the offensive front, putting 28 goals in the back of the net next to Wisconsin’s 29. Northwestern is experienced in ranked matchups this year while playing and winning against Xavier, Stanford, and Rutgers.
4. HISTORY WITH NORTHWESTERN: With a 12-7-3 record all-time against Northwestern, the last five times the teams have faced each other the Badgers have gone undefeated. However, three of the games were decided in overtime, proving just how excellent of a matchup this will be. Although the Badgers are on the road, the city doesn’t effect the result for Wisconsin as its home and away records are both 6-3-2, and 6-3-1, respectively.
