Roald Mitchell, Garrison Tubbs Earn ACC Player of the Week Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Wake Forest men’s soccer sophomore Roald Mitchell has been named ACC Co-Offensive Player of the Week and junior Garrison Tubbs has been named ACC Co-Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.

Mitchell had a career week, scoring his first-ever collegiate hat trick against Winthrop before collecting the game-winning strike against NC State in a 2-0 victory. Tubbs, meanwhile, captained a Wake Forest side that did not allow a shot on goal against the Wolfpack as the Demon Deacons extended their undefeated streak against NC State to 21-straight matches.

It is the first career ACC Player of the Week honors for both, as they join junior Prince Amponsah (ACC Defensive Player of the Week–Sept. 6) in earning weekly conference accolades this season.

In Wake Forest’s 5-1 victory over Winthrop last Tuesday, Mitchell recorded three goals along with his first assist of the season. His seven points on the night were most by a Deac in a single game since Michael Gamble’s nine-point outing against VMI on Sept. 23, 2014. The Montclair, N.J., native also converted on a 15th-minute penalty kick against NC State.

He currently ranks third in the ACC in goals (four) and tied for fourth in points (nine).

Tubbs and the Wake Forest backline smothered the Wolfpack attack on Saturday night, allowing just one shot that was off-target. It marked the second time in the Deacs’ last three matches that they did not allow a shot on goal.

In total, the Demon Deacons have allowed just two goals on the season as well.

Wake Forest will return to the pitch on Tuesday night, hosting Fairleigh Dickinson in non-conference action. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the match will air on ACC Network Extra.
