No. 3 Duke Falls, 3-0, to No. 2 North Carolina on Thursday

DURHAM – In a top-five matchup at Koskinen Stadium on Thursday evening, second-ranked North Carolina registered a 3-0 victory over third-ranked Duke in front of a season-high 3,527 fans.  The 3,527 attendance marked the second-largest crowd for the Blue Devils since the Kennedy Tower was built in 2015.  

Duke (5-2) concluded a three-match stretch where the Blue Devils faced three top-six ranked opponents.  North Carolina improved to 6-1 on the year.

    

How It Happened

•    For the first 30 minutes, the match featured two shots, both by North Carolina.

•    Junior Katie Groff turned in Duke’s only shot attempt in the first half that was saved by Tar Heel goalkeeper Emmie Allen.  

•    North Carolina broke through at the 34:56 mark as Emily Moxley served a corner kick to the head of Tori Hansen, who finished into the left corner to give the Tar Heels a 1-0 lead.

•    At the end of the first 45 minutes, North Carolina held a 5-1 shot advantage.  

•    Duke picked up key defensive stops by junior Nicky Chico and junior Olivia Migli, along with a save from Blue Devil goalkeeper Ruthie Jones in a span of two minutes to start the second half.

•    North Carolina added a second goal in the 75th minute as Emily Murphy redirected a pass from Sam Meza into the left corner past a diving Jones to give the Tar Heels a 2-0 lead.
