Ten Hag Insists Ronaldo has Role to Play at Man Utd After Failed Transfer Request

Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t get his move before the transfer window closed and was only used for 25 minutes off the bench in Thursday’s 1-0 win at Leicester City, but Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is bullish about his future at the club.

Ronaldo came on in the 68th minute and flashed an acrobatic volley wide of the target as United claimed their third straight win after Jadon Sancho’s 23rd minute strike.

The Portuguese superstar made only made one start and four appearances off the bench for United this term.

But Ten Hag insisted that he will be involved more once he rebuilds game fitness lost after missing their pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia.

Ronaldo made that decision, to step away from the tour for personal reasons, after handing in a transfer request in the off-season, seeking a desire for trophies and to play in the UEFA Champions League.

But no suitors came to the fore and a move failed to transpire, leaving Ronaldo to remain at Old Trafford, but Ten Hag insists he has a role to play.

“Once Casemiro and Ronnie (Cristiano Ronaldo) get fitter and fitter, we will (have) more contributions to give to the team,” he said.

“So we need not only a team, but a squad.”

New signing Antony also could be in contention for the Red Devils’ clash with Arsenal on the weekend after joining from Ajax.

“We have to see,” the Dutchman said. “Today he did his first training, individual, and then we have two team sessions and we will see for Sunday.”

Thursday’s win sees United move up to fifth while Leicester have lost four games in a row and are last.
