Tottenham ‘back in’ for Leeds United winger, Marsch’s side fail with ‘informal £17m proposal’

Tottenham-linked Dan James

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly ‘back in negotiations’ with Leeds United over the signing of Daniel James with a loan move a possibility.

The Wales international only made the move to Leeds last summer as they paid £25m to sign him from Manchester United.

James grabbed four goals and four assists in the Premier League last term as Leeds did enough to avoid relegation.

The ex-Swansea City player has been in and out of Leeds’ team this term as he has started two of their first five games. He is without a goal or an assist so far this campaign.

James’ versatility is a strength of his, as well as his blistering pace. Though he is often criticised over his lack of final product.

Tottenham were linked with him last week as Antonio Conte continues to look to add to his squad.

Spurs have already spent big to sign the likes of Richarlison, Yves Bissouma and Cristian Romero this summer.

They are among this summer’s biggest spenders as over £150m has been spent on new recruits.

Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Tottenham are now ‘back in negotiations’ with Leeds over the signing.

The deal looks set to be structured as an initial loan which includes a buy option.

Romano adds that ‘other clubs’ are also keen and it is ‘up to the player’ whether he leaves Leeds or not. He is ‘happy’ but he has a decision to make before Thursday evening.

The journalist has also stated that Leeds will only sign a new attacker if James departs within the next couple of days.

A separate report from David Ornstein of The Athletic has now revealed that Wolves have ‘received an enquiry’ from Leeds for their striker Hwang Hee-Chan.

Leeds submitted an ‘informal £17m proposal’ but this has been ‘turned down’ by their Premier League rivals.

It is stated that Wolves ‘intend to keep’ Hwang and they were not satisfied with the structure of the deal Leeds proposed.

He is under contract until 2026 but Leeds boss Jesse Marsch has made it clear that he is keen on Hwang:

“I know him very well, I like him, he knows our football. He’s on our list, I can tell you that.”

Marsch and Hwang previously worked together while they were at Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig.

Ornstein adds that Leeds are also ‘considering other targets’. PSV winger Cody Gakpo is mentioned as an alternative option.
