Cody Gakpo among pair of Leeds targets to replace James as Spurs ‘back in’

Arsenal target Cody Gakpo

Leeds will consider moving for Wolves star Hwang Hee-chan or Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven if Dan James leaves before the transfer window closes.

Gakpo was thought to be a top target of Manchester United before they spent £84m to land Antony from Ajax, and he was reportedly the subject of a £21m bid from Southampton which was rejected earlier this week.

He remains of interest to a wide array of Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, and now Leeds, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The transfer expert also backed up David Ornstein of The Athletic’s claim that Wolves have ‘received an enquiry’ from Leeds for their striker Hwang Hee-Chan.

Leeds submitted an ‘informal £17m proposal’ but this has been ‘turned down’ by their Premier League rivals.

It is stated that Wolves ‘intend to keep’ Hwang and they were not satisfied with the structure of the deal Leeds proposed.

He is under contract until 2026 but Leeds boss Jesse Marsch has made it clear that he is keen on Hwang:

“I know him very well, I like him, he knows our football. He’s on our list, I can tell you that.”

Marsch and Hwang previously worked together while they were at Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig.

But Romano states that a Leeds move for either Hwang or Gakpo will only happen if Tottenham succeed in their bid to land James.

The Wales international only made the move to Leeds last summer as they paid £25m to sign him from Manchester United.

James grabbed four goals and four assists in the Premier League last term as Leeds did enough to avoid relegation.

James has been in and out of Leeds’ team this term, starting two of their first five games, and is without a goal or an assist so far this campaign.

James’ versatility is a strength of his, as well as his blistering pace, though he is often criticised over his lack of final product.

Tottenham were linked with him last week as Antonio Conte continues to look to add to his squad.

Spurs have already spent big to sign the likes of Richarlison, Yves Bissouma and Cristian Romero this summer.

They are among this summer’s biggest spenders as over £150m has been spent on new recruits.

The deal looks set to be structured as an initial loan which includes a buy option.

Romano adds that ‘other clubs’ are also keen and it is ‘up to the player’ whether he leaves Leeds or not. He is ‘happy’ but he has a decision to make before Thursday…
