Ajax star ‘demanding’ to be sold after €50m Chelsea bid; Villa man potential alternative

Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez applauds the fans

Ajax are fielding more calls from the Premier League, with Edson Alvarez ‘demanding’ he is sold to Chelsea, according to reports.

This summer, the Dutch champions have pretty much lost their whole starting XI from last season.

They have spent around £90million in the transfer window having made over double that figure in player sales.

Erik ten Hag left the club in May to become the new Manchester United manager, and he has brought Lisandro Martinez and Antony with him to Old Trafford.

Noussair Mazraoui and Ryan Gravenberch joined Bayern Munich, Sebastien Haller signed for Borussia Dortmund, meanwhile, Andre Onana, Perr Schuurs and Nicolas Tagliafico are other notable departures.

Just when the Ajax board and fan base thought they would be able to kick back and watch the final days of the transfer window from afar, they have received a fresh offer for a player who hasn’t really been linked with a move away.

According to Telegraaf journalist Mike Verweij, Chelsea have made a bid worth €50m (£43.2m) to sign Edson Alvarez.

The Mexican midfielder is worried that a chance to join a club of Chelsea’s calibre may not come again in his career.

Unsurprisingly, Ajax’s stance on the situation is that they will not allow any more players to leave before Thursday’s transfer deadline.

An easier deal for the Blues to complete could be one to sign Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz.

Thomas Tuchel’s side have been linked with Luiz this week, as have Liverpool, Juventus and Atletico Madrid.

Goal Brasil have reported that the Brazilian could be available for between €12m and €15m, with his contract up in less than a year.

Meanwhile, a Daily Mail report confirms Chelsea’s interest, while noting that Arsenal are also keen.

However, Villa are hoping to convince Luiz to sign a fresh deal.

You get the impression that Chelsea will only try to sign the defensive midfielder as a last resort.

Tuchel is eager to bolster his midfield after basically saying he has no midfielders left due to injuries – despite poor Billy Gilmour being sat on the bench during Tuesday’s loss at Southampton.

Following the game at St Mary’s, Tuchel said: “Yesterday, we had 16 players in training. I cannot dream about what will happen if we have everybody back, I just have what we have on the…
