CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Following a win in the season opener, the University of North Carolina men’s soccer team is back in action on Sunday night to host South Florida. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. ET at Dorrance Field.

Despite an early deficit, the Tar Heels took control on offense and responded with two consecutive goals to seal a 2-1 victory over Air Force in Thursday’s season opener. Milo Garvanian found the equalizer in the 30th minute before assisting the game winner by Key White – who made his first appearance since May 14, 2021 – just before the break.
Carolina, which was slotted at No. 24 in preseason polls by both United Soccer Coaches and College Soccer News, was picked to finish second in the Atlantic Coast Conference Coastal Division. UNC and Pitt both notched two votes to be tied for second behind reigning national champion Clemson as the overall ACC champion.
Midfielder Sebastian Schacht, a graduate transfer from Saint Mary’s (Calif.), was tabbed to the ACC’s preseason watch list. He was also one of 26 midfielders to watch in Division I by United Soccer Coaches.
Graduate transfer Til Zinnhardt, who arrived at Carolina from Tulsa, also earned preseason recognition of his own. He was recently named one of 38 Division I players on the 2022 Hermann Trophy Watch List in addition to being one of 24 student-athletes on the United Soccer Coaches’ preseason watch list for defenders.
Led by Bob Butehorn now in his fifth year as head coach, South Florida is coming off a scoreless draw with Florida Gulf Coast in its season opener after nearly a three-hour weather delay. The Bulls, which had a 6-7-2 record last year, were picked to finish sixth in the American Athletic Conference preseason poll while junior defender Salvatore Mazzaferro and sophomore midfielder were tabbed to the preseason all-conference team.
Sunday will mark the eighth meeting in program history for UNC and USF with the all-time series locked at 3-3-1. The last meeting between the two teams was a 1-0 Tar Heel victory at home in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament. Carolina’s lone goal was scored by Omar Holness, who has returned to Chapel Hill this season to finish his degree and is currently serving as an undergraduate coach.
