CHICAGO, Ill. – The Chicago Red Stars fall to the North Carolina Courage 4-0. Despite the loss the Red Stars still find themselves in playoff contention, hanging on to the sixth spot on the National Women’s Soccer League standings.
KEY MOMENTS:
9′ North Carolina’s Diana Ordoñez finishes off a corner kick by Carson Pickett, escaping the Red Stars defense and goalkeeper, Alyssa Naeher, to place the Courage on the board first.
32′ A pass to Chicago’s Rachel Hill from Vanessa DiBernardo ends with a cross to Bianca St-Georges. St-Georges sends the ball towards the goal with a powerful kick inside the box, but the ball gets deflected by North Carolina.
41′ After receiving the ball in the Red Stars’ own half, Mallory Pugh makes a run with the ball, faking out multiple North Carolina defenders to set up at shot towards the goal that ultimately ricochets off the crossbar.
53′ The ball bounces dangerously around North Carolina’s final third, with DiBernardo and Hill getting touches in, but not being able to take a shot. Danny Colaprico comes racing up from midfield to give the Red Stars a chance to get on the board, but her shot ends up over the crossbar.
64′ North Carolina’s Fuka Nagano taps the ball into the Red Star’s goal after a fight for possession following a corner kick.
65′ A clearance ball from Naeher bounces off a North Carolina player and lands to Pugh who makes a short run to the North Carolina box, but her shot goes just wide of the net
75′ Ordoñez finds the back of the net with a shot from the left side of the box after a pass from Nagano finds her open
88′ Rylee Baisden of North Carolina gets the ball past Alyssa Naeher after a few touches between Baisden and Kerolin.
GAME NOTES:
Despite multiple setbacks, including losing Tatumn Milazzo, the Red Stars defense put on a gritty effort, winning 11 of their 19 tackles during the match.
The Red Stars created many chances and close calls throughout the game, particularly with corners, of which they had nine.
Chicago also totaled 13 shots inside the box, while North Carolina fell just short of the Red Stars with 11 shots inside. The Red Stars also had 19 shots compared to North Carolina’s 14.
