August 20, 2022 – National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) – San Diego Wave FC News Release
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – San Diego Wave Fútbol Club (7-5-4, W-L-D) plays its final match at Torero Stadium this Saturday, August 20, at 7 p.m. PT, against the Houston Dash (7-4-4). The team looks to close out its time at Torero on a high note, securing three points before moving into the new Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday, September 17.
Wave FC hopes to bounce back after two losses at home. Last Saturday, the club fell 0-1 to Orlando Pride, despite 19 shots and looking the better team throughout. The match result came down to a called handball inside the Wave FC box in the 23rd minute.
Searching for her 50th NWSL career goal, forward Alex Morgan led San Diego’s offense last weekend with seven shots against her former team. Taylor Kornieck, also coming from Orlando Pride, followed closely behind with six shots.
“Obviously, we need to react and bounce back from two defeats, which we know we are more than capable of. Houston is in great form. We’ve seen that with their run of results that they’ve had. They’ve got real threats in their top areas, but they’ve also got chinks in their armor as well that I think we can exploit.
So, I am feeling really positive about the group this week, their reaction, the way they’ve bounced. We performed very well in certain moments. We created so many chances; it is now about being ruthless in the final third.”
Casey Stoney, Wave FC Head Coach
Back from injury and now available to play, forward Jodie Taylor looks to recreate history after scoring the game-winning goal against Houston in San Diego Wave FC’s first regular season match on May 1.
The Dash have earned 17 points across eight away matches this season (5-1-2), only following NC Courage and OL Reign in road points. In the past month, Houston’s Ebony Salmon has scored seven goals in five matches and leads the NWSL in most goals scored across that time span.
This Saturday, August 20, is Hispanic Heritage Night at Torero Stadium, presented by XEWT Channel 12 Televisa. It will be a festivities-filled night with food from Daggos and Belindas, a festive plaza atmosphere, live mariachi music and more. First 5,000 fans through the gates will receive a free headband giveaway. Wave FC will also be selling limited-edition merchandise in honor of Hispanic Heritage night.
