COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State’s women’s soccer team will be captained by four seniors this fall. Talani Barnett, Kayla Fischer, Maddy Lowe and Emaly Vatne were all selected to lead the 2022 team.
For Fischer and Vatne, they are now two-time captains as they served in the same role last season. Barnett and Lowe earn the nod for the first time.
Barnett has been a stalwart on the Buckeye back line for four seasons. She has appeared in 70 games which is the most of any player on the team. She has a pair of goals and three assists in her career. Barnett earned third team All-Big Ten honors during the 2021 spring season and was named to the All-Freshman Team in 2018.
Fischer is a two-time All-Big Ten honoree as well as a two-time United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-American. She is sixth in program history with 240 career shots and her 20 goals and 17 assists both rank in the Top 15 in on the OSU career charts. Fischer also earned All-Big Ten Freshman Team honors in 2018 and is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
Lowe has returned healthy this fall after missing last season with a knee injury. The Webster, N.Y. native has played in 51 games over the last three-plus seasons and has a goal and three assists in her career. Lowe was the team’s lone Big Ten Distinguished Scholar last season, and she is a six-time OSU Scholar-Athlete. She also was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman team in 2017.
Vatne played in all 20 games last season, appearing both in the midfield and on the forward line. She scored a goal and had four assists last season but her biggest contribution to this year’s team is her leadership. A veteran of 62 games, the Sterling Heights, Mich., native brings a calming presence both on and off the field. She graduated last year with a degree in exercise science and was a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar during the 2021 spring season.
The Buckeyes opened the season on Thursday night with a 1-0 victory over Kansas and will complete its opening road trip against Missouri on Sunday.
