Chelsea want to spend ‘way less’ than Barcelona’s asking price for ‘priority’

Chelsea-linked Aubameyang

Chelsea reportedly want to spend ‘way less’ than FC Barcelona’s asking price for their striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this summer.

The Blues have never been shy to make a high-profile signing and this has continued at the start of Todd Boehly’s ownership.

Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly were brought in for big fees, though they spent more to sign Marc Cucurella from Brighton for up to £62m.

Cucurealla asssisted Koulibaly for Chelsea’s stunning opening goal against Tottenham on Sunday evening.

The Blues were the better side but they missed chances to put the game to bed in the 2-2 draw.

After Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner flopped and have subsequently returned to Inter Milan and RB Leipzig respectively, Chelsea are in desperate need of a new striker who can score regularly.

This signing could prove to be one nobody saw coming a few weeks ago. This is as they are targeting former Arsenal captain Aubameyang.

Ex-Blues man Tony Cascarino thinks Aubameyang is capable of “getting goals” for the Londoners:

“He is a great finisher and a fabulous footballer, but my only concern is that Jurgen Klopp never went after him. He worked with Aubameyang a lot at Dortmund, but Jurgen was never interested in re-signing him,” Cascarina said (via Football London).

“He was brilliant for Klopp as well but never chose to bring him in – what does that tell you? There’s one thing having a player you had in your 20s and him excelling for you, which Aubameyang did at Dortmund, and then having him again at 33.”

He added: “If Chelsea plays a counter-attacking style, Aubameyang will get goals. Chelsea created a lot of chances last year, Romelu Lukaku didn’t take enough, and neither did Timo Werner.

“But Aubameyang can do that, he is a good finisher. So if Thomas Tuchel wants to play a certain way, to attack and punish teams on the counter, the movement of their players has always been exceptional, and if they add a clinical striker to that, I can see Aubameyang getting goals.”

Blues boss Thomas Tuchel managed Aubameyang during their time working together at Borussia Dortmund.

The German is targeting the striker as a ‘priority’, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

It is well known that Barcelona are in need to offload players with them spending around £140m on new recruits this summer.
