PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA – For the fifth time this season, Detroit City Football Club (7-4-2) was able to come from behind to tie or win, earning a 1-1 draw against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds (7-3-3) at Highmark Stadium on Saturday night.
With limited opportunities for Detroit, Pittsburgh was able to capitalize in the 30th minute. Detroit’s backline was caught flat footed as Riverhounds midfielder Luis Argudo was able to get a ball through a pair of defenders to forward Albert Dikwa – who beat goalkeeper NAte Steinwascher with his right.
It took until late into the second half for Le Rouge to finally get the equalizer. On a great rush down field, midfielder Maxi Rodriguez pulled City even in the 70th minute with his fourth league goal of the season and team-high seventh in all competitions. Midfielder Michael Bryant set the play up with a long ball to left back Deklan Wynne. Wynne took it and ran deep down the left side of the field and made a perfect feed to a trailing Rodriguez to put the ball in the back of the net.
Back in City’s net, Steinwascher continued to be there when needed, including making a huge save early in the game when Pittsburgh forward Russell Cicerone was alone one-on-one on a through ball in the 24′. As time was about to run out at the end of the game, a floating shot was saved by a jumping Steinwascher, while a pair of Riverhounds collided with him mid-air.
While even on the scoreboard, the Riverhounds led in shots with 15 to City’s 10 and shots on target with 6, compared to City’s 2. Steinwascher finished with five saves on the night.
The next game for Le Rouge is Saturday, June 11, at 7:30 pm against the Sacramento Republic FC at Keyworth Stadium. Tickets are available at tickets.detcityfc.com.
