Cristiano Ronaldo will play a key role at Man Utd next season as Ten Hag looks to bring in young players in the transfer market, according to former Arsenal defender Nigel Winterburn.

Ten Hag began work at Man Utd on Monday following months of speculation with the Dutchman looking to get a head start on sorting the “make-up of the staff and the composition of the squad”.

The signings of Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho were meant to take the club towards challenging for the Premier League title this season but it has been a disastrous.

The Red Devils could finish as low as seventh if West Ham beat Brighton and Man Utd lose or draw against Crystal Palace on the final day of the Premier League season.

And Winterburn thinks it is “unsustainable” for Man Utd to throw £100m at individual players and reckons Ten Hag will now look to youth.

The former Arsenal defender told Paddy Power: “No club can continue chucking £100 million on individual players, it’s unsustainable. Going forward, Manchester United will look for players to be brought through the youth team and look at those younger players that are good value and can take the club forward and handle the atmosphere of the club.

“If the rumours are true, that Ten Hag wants to bring the young players from Ajax, then it makes sense because he knows those players and their temperament.

“He’ll want to establish his style of play; he knows the type of players he wants to bring in that will suit his style of play so you can never make a judgement until the manager is in there and has made his signings.

“Sometimes you think you’ll have found the perfect match for your club, but he turns out to be a complete flop. And other times, you take a player you think might do a job, and suddenly, he springs to life and steps up to a level we didn’t know he was capable of.
