SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes defeated the Portland Timbers 3-2 on Wednesday night at PayPal Park. It marked San Jose’s first win over Portland since April 6, 2019, snapping a seven-match winless streak in the series (0-5-2). The Quakes are now 5-1-1 in all competitions (3-1-1 in MLS play) under interim head coach Alex Covelo.
Portland got on the board first before San Jose scored two unanswered goals through Jackson Yueill and Jamiro Monteiro to take a 2-1 lead into halftime. The Timbers answered early in the second half, but the Quakes regained the lead on Monteiro’s second of the night in the 80th minute.
The Quakes have now scored 22 goals this season, fifth most in MLS, including at least three goals in three of their last five matches and five of their 12 regular season matches to date. San Jose is the only team in MLS with 3+ goals in five separate matches this season.
The Earthquakes will continue their two-match homestand when they host Sporting Kansas City on Sunday, May 22, presented by Adobe. The match will kick off from PayPal Park at 4:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast on NBC Sports California, KNBR 1050 (English), and 1370 KZSF (Spanish).

The Earthquakes currently hold a 3-5-4 record (13 pts.) during the 2022 MLS regular season.
