May 15, 2022 – United Soccer League Championship (USL) – Rio Grande Valley FC Toros News Release
SEASIDE, California – Rio Grande Valley FC (4-6-0) ruins the home party for Monterey Bay Union F.C (2-7-0) at Cardinale Stadium on Saturday night as they secure a 1-2 win on the road. The west coast kid, Coronado sneaks a nice chip shot into the net to score the match winner in the first half.
Monterey Bay struck first at the 19th minute on a corner kick try. Hughart Roberts leaped in traffic just inside the 6-yard box and headed the ball into the back of the net to make it 1-0 in favor of the home side.
Emilio Ycaza equalized the match at the 42-minute mark with a beautifully placed strike to the right side of the goal. The ball took a bounce off the right post, past a diving Herrera, 1-1. This marked Ycaza’s first goal of the 2022 campaign.
Just instances later, at the 45th minute, RGV stole the lead for good off the foot of Robert Coronado who had entered the match early as a substitute in place of an injured Daniel Luis Saez. Coronado received a pass from midfielder Juan Pablo Torres and chipped the ball over goalkeeper Carlos Herrera to make it 1-2 in favor of the Toros. The goal was Coronado’s first of the year.
Rio Grande is back in the win column at a crucial time as they prepare for two home matches that will test their strength. Defender Erik ‘Puma’ Pimentel returned to the pitch after missing out due to injury throughout the opening weeks of the season.
The goal by Coronado marked the fourth goal by an RGV F.C defender this season. He joins Luka Malesevic, Wahab Ackwei, and Frank Nodarse on the scoring sheet for the back line.
RGV FC is back at H-E-B Park on Saturday, May 21 for a meeting with San Diego Loyal. For more matchday information, visit www.rgvfc.com.
