HAMTRAMCK, MI – New York Red Bulls II fell to Detroit City FC (5-1-2, 17 points) 2-0 on Saturday, April 30, at Keyworth Stadium.
Red Bulls II put together a strong start but went into the halftime break scoreless after a defensive battle between the two sides.
New York almost vaulted ahead in the 52nd minute, as Juan Castillo ripped a half volley following a corner kick that hit the crossbar.
New York had another good chance with 10 minutes remaining, as Cameron Harper’s shot was saved by Detroit after O’Vonte Mullings surged through the defense and set him up.
Detroit struck shortly after, as Rhys Williams sent in a low cross that was tapped in by Francis Atuahene. In the 90th minute, the margin increased to two, as Atuahene played a ball towards the front of the net that went off Lucas Monzón and into the back of the net for an own goal.
Monzón made his season debut for Red Bulls II, playing the full 90 minutes. He played in one match last season for the club, logging 45 minutes against the Tampa Bay Rowdies on September 11, 2021. Harper and Wiki Carmona also made their season debuts as both came on as second half substitutes. Harper played 25 minutes while Carmona played six.
AJ Marcucci made his seventh start of the season for New York and has started 16 of the club’s last 17 matches dating back to September 19, 2021.
The match marked the first-ever meeting between the two sides, with the return match coming on Wednesday, September 21, at MSU Soccer Park.
Following the match, New York will return home to face Sacramento Republic FC on Sunday, May 8. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET, with coverage available on ESPN+.
