Andreas Pereira could return to Manchester United this summer to kickstart his career under Erik ten Hag, claims a report in Brazil.
The pair are familiar with each other from their time at PSV in Holland. Pereira was with the Dutch club as a youngster from 2005-2011 before joining United. Ten Hag was the assistant at PSV from 2009 and knows Pereira from their two years together.
Goal Brasil, via Sport Witness claims Ten Hag used Pereira as a defensive midfielder in his time in Holland. And that could be Ten Hag’s idea once again as he looks to revamp a midfield that will lose Nemanja Matic and likely Paul Pogba.
Ajax boss Ten Hag is also understood to have tried to sign Pereira recently. But, according to Goal, the Brazil international declined the opportunity out of loyalty to their local rivals PSV.
Of course Pereira is on loan at Flamengo from Old Trafford. And he had been expected to join permanently in the summer.
However, a horror moment in November in the Copa Libertadores final looks to have ended his hopes of a permanent transfer. After stumbling and under-hitting a back-pass, Palmeiras forward Deyverson pounced to score the winning goal in extra time.
Pereira out of favour
And ESPN have stated Flamengo are “preparing to abandon” their plans to activate the €10m option.
The Brazilian club initially agreed a €20m buying option with Manchester United, but that was lowered to €10m.
Meanwhile, the player has also fallen out of favour under new boss Paulo Sousa. He has been benched and the report by Goal suggests “incompatibility with his style of play”.
But that may well be welcomed by Pereira, who could now have a future at Old Trafford.
TNT have claimed that United’s sporting director John Murtough has told the midfielder of he wants to return to the club he will be welcomed with open arms.
Goal Brasil emphasise that Ten Hag’s arrival could be a “decisive factor” with the pair enjoying an “old relationship”.
