Jamie Carragher says Newcastle are safe from relegation following the win over Wolves and believes a top-10 finish could even be possible.
Newcastle picked up a crucial three points as a Chris Wood strike earned them a 1-0 win. The victory at St James’ Park moved them up to 14th, 10 points clear of the drop zone. Burnley and Everton both have two games in hand but Carragher says it does not matter.
Speaking on Sky Sports Carragher questioned whether either the Clarets or Toffees could reach 34 points. There are still seven games left for Newcastle and Carragher is looking higher.
Newcastle looking up
Newcastle had lost three games on the spin going in to the Wolves games. But it is amazing what three points can do.
Carragher was impressed with the way Newcastle played and says they should not be looking over their shoulder. Indeed he thinks they should be looking up at the top half.
Only three points separate them from Leicester City in 10th spot. Again Newcastle have played more games than the teams above them. Even so Carragher believes that the top 10 is achievable.
“Imagine getting to 10th, it might be too much to ask but the way they’re playing, certainly at home, they look like a mid-table Premier League club,” he said. “In these last six or seven weeks they don’t look like a team that’s fighting relegation.
“They are a dangerous team, got certain players, Saint-Maximin, Bruno Guimaraes, they’ve got quality, no doubt.”
